Written In the Stars

I am pleased to announce that this animated poster was one of the winners of the 2021 Burda Festival.

“Written in the Stars” is an animated poster that showcases the display font “Halazoni”. One of this typeface’s key features is its structure whereby it is made of thin strokes and integrates a negative space in the body. This in turn allows for the outlines to denote directionality and movement. The rounded edges and curviness in this font also create a rhythm in the overall body text and the harmonious circular structure connects all the letter forms in unity. This font’s unique anatomy makes it a perfect experimentation ground for glow effects. Glow effects often make a font appear bulky, but not in the case of Halazoni; the negative space is designed for the glow to shine effectively. Therefore, sections where light is discussed were selected. The passages mention the galaxies and celestial motives. The poster pays respect to that in integrating a celestial chart form rotating the back. The rotation resembles the ever moving orbit of the plants and constant expansion of the universe. The animation highlights the font’s directionality and appears on the poster from the top to bottom. This is done in a way to mimic how the light from the stars comes from the sky and eventually fall down to the Earth. Finally, the poem mentions how light rid the universe of the darkness and gave life to the nations, the type performs a similar act in a way where the poster was dark before the text appeared and gave life to the piece.
